John Randall – 1843-1927

John Randall, son of William Randall and Sarah Goodin, was born January 15, 1843 in Glanford Township of Wentworth County. The date is taken from John's entry in the 1901 census. His twin brother Henry gave the date as October 24, 1842 in the same census.

Marriage

From the Berliner Journal of September 22, 1864 we know that John married Wilhelmine Repien, both of Peel Township on September 20, 1864. The wedding was performed by Rev Bindemann.

Local News
    Mr. John Randall has purchased a draying business in Preston. His son Jacob is in charge of it.
The Elmira Signet printed a Local News item on page 1 of the July 19, 1900 edition. His son, Jacob, was still living in Preston in 1927.

Seriously Ill
    John Randall, one of Elmira's oldest citizens, is reported seriously ill at his home on Water street. His condition is such that his relatives have gathered at his bedside. Among those are Sam Randall of Palmerston and Jos. Randall of Kitchener.

    Final respects were paid to the late John Randall, aged 84, and pioneer Elmira citizen, who was laid to rest in Elmira Cemetery, Tuesday afternoon, The funeral took place from his late residence, Factory street, to St. Paul's Lutheran church, and, thence to the cemetery.
    The late Mr. Randall was born on January 15, 1843, at Glanford, Wentworth County. He came to Elmira with his parents when he was about 12 years of age. He has resided in this vicinity ever since, occupying the same home for the past 60 years. In 1864 he married Wilhelmina Rapien, who predeceased him five years ago. Of the nine children born to them, only three are living. They are: Mrs. Henry Kraft, Elmira; Mrs. William Wilken, Elmwood, Neb.; and Jacob Randall, Preston. Two brothers and one sister also survive, Sam Randall, of Palmerston; Joseph Randall, of Kitchener, and Mrs. George Cathrae, of Elmira. There are also 18 grandchildren.
    The late Mr. Randall has always been hale and hearty and only during the last year or so has he been ailing. Death was due to pneumonia.
    All children, with the exception of Mrs. Wilken, of Elmwood, Neb., who was ill, were present at the funeral.

Birth

Wilhelmina Christina Rapien was a daughter of Dietrich Rapien and Mary Schultz. "Minnie" was born in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin area of Germany on August 4, 1842 and came to Canada in 1857. The dates come from information found in the 1901 Census and her obituary.

Her obituary appeared in the "Elmira Daily Record" section of the K-W Record on Tuesday December 27, 1921, page TWO. Issues of the Elmira Signet for the last half of December 1921 are lost, but the information would have been substantially the same.

The Late Mrs. John Randall
    On Sunday afternoon, Christmas Day, the remains of the late Wilhelmina Rapien, the beloved wife of Mr. John Randall was laid to rest at the Elmira Union Cemetery. Rev. A. Gallmeier conducted the funeral services. The late Mrs. Randall was in her 79th year, she was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, village of Mathof, and came [to] Canada in June 1857, then 14 years of age, and with her parents settled in Waterloo County. In 1864 she married John Randall of Kitchener. They came and have ever since lived in Elmira. She had been always in the very best of health, until some time ago, she suffered a stroke. She leaves to mourn her beloved husband, three daughters and one son. Mrs. David Ziegler of Elmira, Mrs. Wm Wilkin of Elmwood, Nebraska, Mrs. Henry Kraft, Elmira and Jacob Randall of Preston. The funeral took place at 2 o'clock at the home to St. Paul's Lutheran church for services thence to the Union Cemetery for burial.
